Neuroprognostication Practices of Pediatric Intensivists and Child Neurologists: Comparing and Contrasting Approaches
(University at Buffalo IRB #STUDY00010355)
Principal Investigators: Maria Wang, MD (PGY-4, Child Neurology) and Sandhya Joshi, MD (PGY-7, Pediatric Critical Care, Internal Medicine-Pediatrics) through University at Buffalo Department of Neurology
Introduction: You are invited to participate in a research study aimed at better understanding how pediatric intensivists and child neurologists approach neuroprognostication in severe brain injury. You have been selected to participate through the mailing list of PALISI and/or CNS.
Purpose of the Study: The purpose of this study is to map the current landscape of neuroprognostication in pediatric neurocritical care. We aim to identify how different specialties weigh clinical data, imaging and electrophysiology when generating a prognosis for children with severe acute brain injury.
What Will Happen If I Participate? If you agree to participate, you will complete a one-time anonymous electronic survey via REDCap.
-
Duration: The survey will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete.
-
Content: You will be asked about your demographics, your institution's available resources (e.g., 3T MRI, continuous EEG), and your prognostic estimates for specific clinical vignettes involving pediatric traumatic brain injury and cardiac arrest.
Risks: This study presents no more than minimal risk. This is an anonymous survey, as no personal identifiers (names, emails, or IP addresses) are collected or stored. Free-text items in the survey are optional to complete and do not solicit identifiable information.
Benefits: There are no direct benefits to you for participating. However, your participation may help the medical community better understand how prognosis is determined in critically ill children, potentially leading to improved educational guidelines and standardization of care.
Compensation: There is no financial compensation for participation in this study.
Confidentiality: Your responses are anonymous.
-
We will not collect your name, email address, or IP address.
-
Data will be stored on secure, password-protected servers and reported only in aggregate form.
-
Optional free-text responses may be used in publications but will be edited to ensure no identifiable information is released.
Voluntary Participation: Participation is entirely voluntary. You may choose not to participate, skip any questions you do not wish to answer, or close the survey at any time without penalty.
